Chapter Twelve

The following day, Chloe and I decided to stop by and talk to Mr. Frank’s nephew, Eddie Franks. He had worked for Cookie several years earlier, so Chloe wouldn’t have a problem getting him to talk to her. At least we hoped that she wouldn’t.

We pulled up to Eddie’s house, and I was surprised at its condition. It was in a shambles. Weeds grew in the front yard. Part of the peeling and tattered white picket fence was broken down, and cardboard covered one of the front windows.

“I don’t think life has been good for Eddie,” I whispered as we walked up to the front porch.

Chloe shook her head. “I don’t think so either. I didn’t know him that well when he worked for my mother. I was still in high school. But he seemed nice.”

Chloe knocked on the door and we could hear heavy footsteps approaching on the other side. When the front door swung open, Eddie looked at us quizzically, and then recognition dawned in his eyes. “Chloe! Wow, how are you?”

Chloe smiled. “I’m good, Eddie. How are you doing? We heard about your uncle, and we wanted to stop by and tell you how sorry we were.”

He frowned and sighed. “Yeah, I still can’t get over the fact that Uncle Leland is dead.”

“I’m sorry for your loss,” I said. “My name is Maddie Bradford. I work with Chloe at the ice cream shop.”

He nodded, smiling. “Sure, I remember you. I went in there a few times last summer to get ice cream. Thanks for stopping by and offering your condolences. That’s nice of you.”

I smiled. “You’re welcome. Mr. Franks was a nice man. I enjoyed it when he stopped by the shop to show us what he had found on the beach.”

He chuckled. “He did love his treasure hunting.”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure. What?”

“If you had to guess who might have killed your uncle, who would it be?” I could see Chloe looking at me from the corner of my eye, and I hoped I wasn’t rushing things.

His jaw tightened. “Yeah, I know exactly who killed my uncle. It was Lucy Jacobs. His so-called caregiver.” He rolled his eyes. “She can call herself that all she wants, but I know what she was. She was a leech.”

“Really?” Chloe asked, sounding concerned. “What was she supposed to be doing for your uncle?”

He snorted. “I’d like to know the same. All I could see that she did was get him to pay her bills and let her live at his house for free.”

“She wasn’t actually working for him?” I asked.

He rolled his eyes again. “If you’ve ever been inside the house, you’d know that she wasn’t doing any work around there. It was a mess. I don’t think that woman would know what to do with a broom if her life depended on it. But she kept insisting that he needed her help.” He snorted. “He didn’t need her help. He was in good health. You saw him out wandering the beach every day.
